Bowen brushes off potential coal company backlash from price cap
Energy Minister Chris Bowen said he was not worried about any potential backlash from coal companies if a price cap were to be established.
He said the coal industry has benefited heavily from turmoil in energy markets from the Ukraine war, and the federal government would ensure consumers are not penalised for these companies’ gains, as “it’s not their fault”.

“It’s no secret that some people in the coal industry are very happy with the current situation. But the Australian government and the state governments and the Australian people are not happy with the situation of coal and gas that has led to these big spikes in energy prices,” he told ABC Radio.
“There are different perspectives on that, but our job is to put the national interest first.
“Australians didn’t decide to invade Ukraine, Australians didn’t decide the price of coal and gas will spike.”
