Winter only started 21st Dec (winter solstice) and goes to the equinox in March so mid winter is end January and Feb. I did make the mistake a few years ago wanting to drive from Zurich to Stuttgart in mid April via the black forest. Nah! the road was closed right at the start and under a couple of metres of snow. It's still on my bucket list though.
