The politician calls it dangerous for both Greenland and the Kingdom, now that the US president has clearly expressed a desire to take over and control Greenland:
- Greenlandic politicians are openly opening up to cooperation with China in a geopolitically difficult situation. I think that is extremely provocative, and I don't understand why people do it.
- China is an authoritarian superpower that is seeking a foothold in the Arctic. There is a large country next to Greenland that will not accept that in any way. It threatens NATO and challenges the security of the Kingdom, Ahrendtsen said during his speech.
- A red flag
The statements come after several media outlets, including DR, reported last week that the Minister of Natural Resources and Enterprise, Naaja Nathanielsen (IA), and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vivian Motzfeldt (S), have both made statements indicating that Greenland wants more cooperation with China, for example within investments in natural resources.
The statements were harshly criticized by Alex Ahrendtsen on Tuesday.
- It is not okay to wave a red flag in front of the bull and flirt with China. It is not a solution and it makes things worse, he said, among other things.
The Greenlandic member of parliament Aaja Chemnitz (IA) said in this connection that she finds it very positive that the Ministry of Natural Resources is working with a so-called investment screening mechanism, where they look at what kind of investments are coming to the country, as well as what interests are involved.
- Precisely because we have seen in Africa that there have been really bad examples of this, said Aaja Chemnitz during the debate on Tuesday.
Sermitsiaq has interviewed Naalakkersuisoq Naaja H. Nathanielsen about the criticism of her statements, and that interview will be published later this week.
