Sydneyguy, borrowed stock from a prime broker is not reported to asx as a short. That short register doesn't show hedge funds borrowed stock, and therefore isn't representative of the actual short. And anyway, you don't have to actually sell stock you don't have to be short. Index funds who sell some or all of their holdings down below market weight ie going underweight, are effectively short....
