There are fees paid for borrowing shares from the borrowing shorters to the holders.
If you are focused on long term (i.e. will be holding for a long time) then this another way to generate revenue from the holding.
Long term holders are not interested in the swings produced by short term traders so they don't care about the price going down for a while if they are firm on their convictions on the long term success of the stock.
That's why they lend the shares to shorters.
