The big daddies in the turbine world are the Vestas 7 MW and the Siemens 10 MW.
Vestas has a geared model whilst Siemens is a direct drive design and uses a bunch of REE magnets. The direct drive design is highly favoured over geared designs for the bigger models as they offer greatly reduced maintenance costs.
This is an especially attractive feature in off-shore wind farms as it's bit of a PITA to do too much maintenance in a windy ocean. And let's face it, if wind farms are going to power the world, then they will have to be off-shore as greenies are the epitome of NIMBY. "I want my fairy dust to be created elsewhere, and magic will bring it to me"
