Microsoft, American Express, Google, Intel Corp and Morgan Stanley are due to report tonight with 1300 on the S & P broken.

"I find the amount of optimism quite remarkable given some of the uncertainty that is overhanging at the moment," said David Land, analyst at CMC Markets.
"History may suggest that it is a time for increased levels of caution. The big question remains as to the funding of the (euro zone) region further out and where the funding is going to come from," he said.
