    Gujarat’s ‘Wollongong’ all at sea

    Wednesday, 7 March 2012
    Lou Caruana

INDIAN mining magnate and executive chairman of Gujarat NRE Arun Jagatramka saw his latest acquisition, a coal ship called the “U-Sea Wollongong” sail through the heads of Port Kembla harbour in New South Wales on Monday morning.

    The U-Sea Wollongong.
The U-Sea Wollongong berthed at the Port Kembla coal terminal around midnight to load 60,000 tonnes of coal from the NRE Wongawilli Colliery prior to its 21-day journey to India.

Jagatramka said the naming of the first of his fleet of bulk carriers was another significant milestone in the company’s journey since it purchased its first mine in Wollongong in 2004.

“Owning our own ship gives us continuity and reliability of operations to meet our commitments to our customers back [in] India,” he said.

The 200m by 32m ship, with a dead weight of almost 62,000t, was built in Oshima shipyards in Japan (near Nagasaki), launched in April last year and delivered in June.

Its voyage from China to Port Kembla had a crew of 20 with captain Jefferson P Galam at the helm.

Port Kembla coal terminal general manager Peter Green said newly built vessels had features and technologies that further improved energy efficiency, safety and productivity.

Jagatramka was previously named Illawarra Person of the Year and has been appointed as an honorary New South Wales Sydney ambassador to India by the NSW government.

Gujarat’s two mines, NRE No.1 at Russell Vale and NRE Wongawilli west of Dapto, employ more than 600 workers.
