'Djungan people win native title in FNQ
From: AAP
August 02, 2012 4:55PM
THE Federal Court has granted the Djungan people native title to over 150,000 hectares of land in far north Queensland.
In a consent determination handed down on Thursday, the Djungan were awarded exclusive rights to possession, occupation, use and enjoyment over approximately 149,915ha in and around Mount Mulligan, west of Mareeba.
The court also awarded non-exclusive camping, hunting and travel rights over an additional 33,058ha.
Queensland Natural Resources Minister Andrew Cripps congratulated the Djungan people for their work since 1995 in establishing their native title claim.
"Today's decision is the culmination of much hard work from the Djungan people and their representatives," Mr Cripps said.
"Preserving indigenous culture and identity through native title determinations is integral to achieving more economic benefits and independence for traditional owners on their land."
