The Great Expectation and the Great Disappointment either side of 1844 were big deals. Jehovah Witness, Mormons and the SDA came about because of it and dozens of minor religions in the US as well. Other movements formed in other countries, all focused on this 1844. It wasn't just the SDA, William Miller had followers all over the world, including Australia, all convinced that 1844 was the year that Christ would return.
And don't worry too much about falling for such stuff, humans fall for all different kinds of nonsense every day. It's what we do best, that is, make fools of ourselves. Religion just gives us the best opportunity to show just how really, really gullible and foolish we really are. It was invented for the non-drinkers who were jealous of how stupid drunks can be.
