Its highly misleading to compare the Gulf war with todays possible conflict. They are like chalk and cheese. The Gulf war was to remove Iraqi forces from Kuwait - its purpose was not to invade Iraq and topple Saddams regime. Big. big difference.
Based on my readings of the Gulf war its abundantly obvious the average Iraqi conscript will not fight, but unfortunately the loyal Republican Guard will.
Talk of a war over in a couple of days is clearly wrong if you subscribe to the view that troops loyal to Saddam will fight. By dispersing these loyal forces in urban areas - who are kitted out with the latest weaponry that money can buy - Saddam will be able to provide stiff resistance. My take is that his strategy will be to inflict high casulties causing the Western pollies to lose their nerve and cease hostilities. This of course will not work but the end result will be a very messy and relatively prolonged campaign.
Finally, when its all over then you have to ask the obvious question - whos next???
