THERE is a certain quiet desperation in the recruiting industry.
With only around 5 per cent of job candidates in high demand roles actively looking for new jobs, the key is to reach the “passive’’ 70 per cent of workers who are gainfully employed but would be willing to move for the right job.
That is where fast growing and disruptive technology group 1-Page comes in, using its own sourcing engine to provide a range of potential leads that come from sources including Facebook friends of existing employees.
Once the details are crunched through 1-Page’s algorithms and checked against publicly available information, potential hires can then be approached with an email from their friend rather than a cold call from a headhunter.
“Friends are more than happy to help people they know to get a job and they are a great source of information,’’ said 1-Page chief executive Joanna Weidenmiller, who claimed that people are five times more likely to respond to an approach from a friend.
With referral hires faster, better, more numerous and more likely to be retained longer term, the 1-Page approach has been embraced by many companies large and small.
Unusually, Ms Weidenmiller is also a staunch fan of the Australian Securities Exchange, with 1-Page being the first Silicon Valley company to get a backdoor listing here.
“When you want to grow a company without diluting your interest, the ASX is a great alternative to venture capital groups in the US,’’ she said.
That is something of an understatement as 1-Page’s market capitalisation has quickly vaulted since its October listing to an impressive $285 million.
While valuing technology models is a difficult task, at least 1-Page has a reasonably robust revenue model and applies to the fast growing global recruitment market.
Potential value uplifts include a Nasdaq listing down the track and further development of 1-Page’s talent assessment and internal innovation platforms.
1-Page is a speculative buy despite having already risen strongly.
