Several very informative and spot on posts by OMG, doc, dicko, and Riminconsult. It is extremely rare, virtually never will a kiln be fired if it is not going to be used in production because of the possibility of damage.

One possibility was mentioned by dicko … Lynas may have enough ore present to run for commissioning.

Another possibility was mentioned by doc… they are firing to cure the refractory.

Another possibility would be that Lynas is anticipating immediate use of the kiln in production. I believe OMG and Riminconsult may be leaning in that direction because of the rarity of a kiln being fired and not used in production, a rarity indeed.

Each of those possibilities have merit. One thing for sure whatever the reason a kiln is fired, it can be confirmed as fired by observing heat escaping 24/7 from effluent until the kiln is shut down. Any firing is a step forward, IMO.
