A rotary kiln, once lined with refractories, requires firing to cure the "cement" used to stick the refractories to the walls of the kiln. If this is not done there is a risk the "cement" will absorb moisture and become ineffective, however once fired the "cement" sets and the kilns can be cooled and are ready for operations. I suspect this firing of the kilns is just that and should not be confused with "1st feed to kilns"
