See below for extracts from a media release from WESSA. As I was saying, if you read between the lines, its not too difficult to see the real agenda. The N2 road is going ahead, which virtually implies that MRC will get its mining permit.
3 September 2003 – MEDIA RELEASE issued by WESSA (Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa)
The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) has been reliably informed that the decision on the controversial N2 toll road has been delayed until after the World Parks Conference. It is understood that the reason for the delay is in order to avoid negative publicity during this showcase event.
The announced decision by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) as to whether the road would be allowed, was due in late June. The decision has now reportedly been delayed till mid-November.
If this is true (about the decision being delayed in order to avoid negative global publicity at the World Parks Conference)," says WESSA's conservation director Cathy Kay, "it means that the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism knows that a decision in favour of the road is not in the interests of the South African environment. Why else would they want to avoid making a controversial decision like this if they were not aware that they would be criticised globally for this move?
The minister must stop paying lip service to conservation and declare himself to the world. If he believes that a major highway through an area that botanists describe as irreplaceable is good sense environmentally, then why won't he announce his decision during the World Parks Conference?"
