That' a good rule for the future although you would have to agree ( sub prime and all ) that the timing sucked. I wonder what the sp would have been without consolidation ? Guess we'll never know.
Of course , it also depends on the type of investor you are . If you are a mid to long termer ( 3+ years ) and you are confident in the company ( not in love ) then why sell ? What are you going to do with the money in the mean time ? If you are a trader , it makes sense to bail and take advantage of the volatility of the market. Unfortunately I'm not that experienced so I'm just going to ride it out and learn something along the way.
