Well I think the shareholders in Silver mines might have a different opinion .Australias biggest silver deposit is stuck in legal/regulatory limbo for years .Whether a mine ever gets built remains to be seen.As far as I can tell from afar Australias federal labor government is more interested in the environment than miners ,I could be wrong of course.
Last time I checked DEG is being taken over for a set amount of paper.Gor can either just accept the paper or at least sell out some DEG shares for some cash ,I dont see how GOR,s position in De grey has upside. It will only have upside if the acquirers share price increases or if another bid comes in(unlikely I think).
Agnico is a smart operator ,Canada’s biggest miner .they have made some superb investments decisions for good prices including the best one Detour lake ,they paid less than what is being paid for Deg ,got a completed mine producing more than 500,000 ounces of gold a year (since expanded) and 30 million ounces of reserves.
They also own 100 % (up from 50% )of Canada’s biggest mine Malartic.
Agnico has just bought for cash O3 mining for 200 million Canadian ,it has almost 2 million ounces of in ground gold and is very close to their Malartic mine and mill.So using that valuation Deg would be worth around 1 billion Canadian ,to pay 3.5 Billion for DEG (I took off thier cash reserves)would mean they think DEG has 40 million ounces. This is a long term saga and the fat lady will sing when the Hemi mine is built ,operating and generating cash flow .Its a long way from that scenario.Historically majors in the past have overpaid for gold in the ground .Majors such as Agnico learnt from past experience ,perhaps that message hasnt spread to Australia.
However I will sing the praises of DEG management ,they found a tier 1 deposit and have sold it out for about 2-3 times what it is likely worth ,they don't have the stress of trying to build a complex mine without any cash flow, very smart decision.
Its very hard to predict the future so we will watch and see what happens.I just represent my own personal opinions and am not paid to provide them unlike others.
