BORDER protection authorities have intercepted two more boats carrying asylum seekers overnight ? making it five boats in the past week.

Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said this morning HMAS Leeuwin intercepted a boat carrying 65 people north north-east of Christmas Island late last night.

HMAS Ararat intercepted a vessel carrying 71 people west of Christmas Island early this morning

The latest boat arrivals bring to five the number of boats intercepted since last Saturday.

On Wednesday authorities intercepted 198 people on two vessels, while last Saturday a boat carrying 127 people was intercepted.

In a statement Immigration Minister Chris Bowen and Mr Clare said boats would continue to come to Australia unless the Federal Opposition was willing to come to an agreement with the Gillard Government to deter asylum seekers from making dangerous journeys by sea.
“These latest boat arrivals are further evidence of the consequences of the Coalition’s relentless negativity,” Mr Bowen said.

“Every time a boat arrives, (Opposition Leader Tony) Abbott should state why he said no to his own policy of Nauru and to an independent review into the effectiveness of temporary protection visas.”

Mr Bowen said the government had been prepared to negotiate with the coalition to see offshore processing legislation pass through federal parliament.

“In the three months before Mr Abbott said no to our legislation in September, 12 boats with 764 people arrived,” Mr Clare said.

“In the three months after he said no, 30 boat numbers with 2,204 people arrived. The number of asylum seekers tripled after Mr Abbott said no to our legislation.”

Mr Clare called on the opposition to pass the government’s legislation, which aims to process asylum seekers in Malaysia and Nauru.
