Two more companies are being allowed to search for geothermal energy sources in Tasmania.
Tasmania and South Australia have been identified as good sources of "hot rocks" which are combined with water to generate steam and power.
A subsidiary of Allegiance Mining has been licensed to search more than 2,000 sq kms near the Arthur-Pieman River on the West Coast.
The interstate company, Geopower, has been assigned almost 5,000 sq kms in the North-East.
The State Government says geothermal energy is sustainable and environmentally friendly, with minimal greenhouse emissions.
