The Am Ex campaign was a little alarming lol. I think you're right - IMO the writing is on the wall for BNPL - it will have demand as a fit for a marketing tool for merchants as well as people who can't or won't use credit cards, but the challenge is to make if financially viable enough to get the fees down to ensure take up, balanced against making enough money to keep investors happy
