The patent actually covers a broad number of 'mesenchymal-like' cells derived from various tissues and anatomical sites. Do take a look at the patent yourself. It almost covers (grey area) cells that was modified genetically (traditional virus vector method) to become a mesenchymal-like cell. I was surprised to see such broad patent coverage, credit to SI of course.
I think where competitors can work around these patents are in the iPSC or using newer gene-editing tool CRISPR/CAR-modified cells. My opinion only
