I remember seeing media in WA over a decade ago that the raindrops would be the wrong shape.
Such a simple and common met phenomena such as rain has lead a range of Oz pollies to make stupid statements. There was a WA premier (I can recall his face) was once a journo - thanks to Wiki - Premier Alan Carpenter - said along lines "the rain has stopped falling in SW WA in quantities that could run into pipes etc..."
I recall a NSW Pollies too claiming surprise at a flood event in a NSW rural town -- but google turned up articles that the town had flooded in recent years too.
I think you will find too that Christchurch flooded in March 2014 - also claimed as a 1 in a 100 year event.
