I have ridden rolercoasters all the way up, and back down to below the red line, a recent example being ESR where I was 6 bagging and sitting so confidently, that I allowed it to ride all the way down to below my buy-in price - ouch! Once there, I have held and am now back in the black and hopeful
As to RNU, there are differences as this mob have actually found a resource and are developing it rather than looking for smething that might not be there, so i have a little more confidence that the climb will be over time. Of course, there wil be in and out traders (myself included) that can cause a speccy to drop dramatically if the wait for news is too long etc.
Have you considered a trailing sell rather than a stop loss? In case you are not familiar (apologies if you are) it woudl look something like this on my Westpac account:
