"They" are the "Smart Money" who are those who have the $dollars$, knowledge and technical resources to take advantage of market sentiment and volatility.
"They" are often shadowed by day traders.
"They" are sophisticated investors, fund managers and companies/businesses (nominees) operating on behalf of investors.
"They" may choose to purchase both the stock and also hedge against it when the timing is right so they are interested in the SP movement in either direction.
"They" have been around since the stock market began.
