It is bizarre butcherboy, because as you quite correctly suggest the periodic table cannot lie. All smoke and mirrors such statements, as a lot of elements can make a battery to generate electrons, but only one Lithium is number 3 on the periodic table, and science and basic principles say that it can't be beaten for electric charge produceable for the weight of the element. In summary, High charge and Low weight makes cars move very fast. For those who have a scientific bone in their body, what are the two lighter elements on the periodic table? They are Hydrogen and Helium both very light gaseous elements. Thankfully Lithium doesn't float away as a gas, although even though it is a metal it will float on water, which again is a great example of how light it is.
One day someone may well invent an Aluminium battery, but it won't be used in a product that has to move, be lightweight and be powerful as well.
