From memory, aluminium has 3 electrons in its outer shell, while lithium only has 1. So aluminium ions will have 3 times the negative charge of a lithium ion, thus partly compensating for the larger size. Another bizarre fact, ammonia (NH3) crams more hydrogen in a fixed space than pure hydrogen, despite the extra nitrogen atom.
