Seriously????? How do I get a job like this?
A $1 million man
In its 2019-20 annual report, the bank for the first time published the salaries for each of its top seven executives, non-executive members of the RBA board, and non-executive members of the payments systems board.
The latest release shows the governor pocketed total remuneration of just over $1 million last financial year, off a base salary of $911,728; the deputy took home just over $787,000, off a base salary of $668,595.
The RBA governor is paid about double what the Prime Minister earns, and more than most other senior public servants, such as the heads of the Prime Minister’s Department, Treasury and financial regulators.
The salaries of both positions have been set by the Remuneration Tribunal since 2011, after then-treasurer Wayne Swan took issue with the board approving a salary for then-governor Glenn Stevens of $1.05 million.
Following the board approving a $239,000 increase to the governor’s pay as the global financial crisis unfolded, Mr Swan issued a furious missive that he expected the bank in future to “discharge its powers with an emphasis on ensuring salaries are adjusted to be in line with community expectations”.
