Hi mate. Not going too deep on the chemistry side. Simply speaking, all the metal will be dissolved into acid solution during HPAL. The SX reagent will be used to extract the specific metal, in this case, cobalt, nickel and scandium. SX reagents have selectivity due to their chelation with these metals. Flippa01 explained the process quite extensively in another poster, which worth a reading.
