A spokeswoman for Treasury Wine Estates said: “The claims made by GMT Research are unsubstantiated, and even the writer acknowledges that his conclusions are speculative," she said in an emailed statement."We will refute all claims in our results presentation next week. We have already provided guidance on P&L, balance sheet and cash.”
GMT describes itself as an accounting research firm based in Hong Kong.
It was recommending clients "avoid" investing in Treasury Wine Estates but said a poor result next week could change its recommendation to "sell" or "short".
It comes as short-sellers have been circling Treasury Wine Estates for more than one year.
About 4.6 per cent of the company's shares are reported in the hands of short-sellers, according to Shortman, which makes it the 57th most shorted stock on the ASX boards.
