Space Tracking & Surveillance System (STSS) Northrop Grumman Space Technology is developing STSS, a critical enabler for
the nation’s missile defense architecture.  Operating in low-earth orbit, STSS satellites will use onboard infrared sensors to detect, track and discriminate
ballistic missiles throughout their trajectories.  As the Missile Defense Agency’s only global tracking system, STSS will work with other assets to improve the
performance of the overall missile defense system The first STSS satellites are now scheduled for launch in 2006 – 2007, to be followed by enhanced capability satellites

Northrop Grumman Space Technology of Redondo Beach, Calif., is the prime contractor on the STSS, a program to develop satellite-based technologies
for tracking missiles in the mid-course portion of flight, after their motors burn out. The company’s STSS contract already is worth $860 million,
with roughly 85 percent of those funds going toward the 2007 flight demonstration, Weidenheimer said in an interview here at Air Force Space
and Missile Systems Center. The balance of those funds is going toward design work on future missile tracking systems, he said.

The U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) plans to award Northrop Grumman Space Technology a contract in the next five to six months to build at least
one new experimental missile-tracking satellite that would be launched around the end of the decade.

If EOS arn't involved here, I get the impression EOS might have been iced after all?
