i know of a person who thought he was an atheist until faced with a horrendous decision. He found himself asking for some help and guidance. This wasn't from those around him, it was in his head to someone, something other than himself. He now doubts his atheism but........ I wonder how many of us would find ourselves in a similar frame under certain straining circumstances. Until we are faced with it we will never know.
