I feel the breakeven point for coal isn't actually that low, I thought it was more closer to the $80 mark, especially for Black Coal which is used by most of our power stations. The article also fails to account for the fact at all of the coal power stations are at or very close to their design age limits. Failures will now tend to be far more severe and management will have to consider the future more when it comes to justifying the capex spend on repairs as pay back times will potentially take years. Infigen is in a good position here, it's stable with a solid development pipeline ready to go when the old clunkers start falling over. What we're seeing here is a short term imbalance in the market.
Several years ago gas would have filled the gap but it priced itself out of contention. Renewables are the future.
