I think capital preservation is very important at this time. Global economies are getting trashed and this will continue as we cant fight this virus unless we manage to control it in some way without shutting down the economy.
Im not a fan of banks in general as europe and US etc present a different situation than we have here. The US for example has around 5000 commercial banks with 15 major banks of real consequence. In Australia we have about 50 or 60 i think, 10 major banks and only 4 i.m.o of any real consequence.
Heres the interesting point, jp morgan the US largest bank has total assets of less than 3 trillion, bank of America US second biggest bank about 2 trillion in total assets, wells fargo 3rd biggest US bank has about 1.75 trillion in total assets. Our top 4 banks all have about 900 billion each in total assets. Thats almost 1 trillion a piece.
Our four major banks a few years ago were among the world's largest banks by market capitalisation and all ranked in the top 25 globally for safest banks. They were also some of the most profitable in the world. Of course things have changed on a global perspective however our top 4 banks remain some of the most safest financial institutions on the planet. I obviously had little to do this morning...great weekend to all..stay safe.
