Some lines, such as Maryborough to Mildura/Yelta, are now OK for permitted maximum speeds, but you're correct if referring to lines like Dunolly to Sea Lake and Korong Vale to Manangatang that ought have been converted from broad (1600mm) to standard (1435mm) gauge but were not as the funding for the Murray Basin Rail project ran out. Spending millions onnew NON-gauge convertible concrete sleepers on the Sea Lake line is shortsighted.

Standard gauge grain trains from Yelta/Ouyen/Murrayville/Speed/Birchip must deviate at Maryborough via Avoca, the outskirts of Ararat, Maroona and Westmere to reach the Port of Geelong or Appleton Dock in Melbourne, as there's no direct standard gauge route via Creswick, Ballarat and Meredith to Gheringhap near Geelong. This adds distance, time and obviously cost, but remains preferable to legions of B-Doubles thundering down highways.
