There is a story in the business section of 'The Australian' on 23 DEcember 2020 about how Carlton and United Breweries (owned by Asahi of Japan, but soon to become a Heineken subsidiary) is dealing direct with 30 barley growers in Victoria.
The story specifically mentions how CUB cut out the middleman, which it names as GrainCorp. CUB claims there's better control of growers supplying the type of barley it wants.
This is a concerning trend, even though the volume would be relatively small. The barley grower interviewed and pictured says he only grew half as much as last year though.
