My take -
Making an announcement about using the tech of a somewhat new and unknown company is fine when you're in the business of developing chips yourself like Renesas, and staying on the cutting-edge is critical.
Totally different ball-game when you manufacture cars and the perception of consistency, reliability, safety is critical. That's why Ford want's to keep it on the down-low. I don't think it's so much about competitive advantage (although that also) as just they don't want to be openly associated withing products/companies until their a proven quantity. BRN will get there, IMO in 2021
