If you coat the non-contact parts of the battery with an enteric coating, especially the bit around the rim where the anode and cathode are separated, the battery will pass beyond the oesophagus before corroding further on in the digestive tract.
Some medicinal pills have such a coating to ensure th pill dissolves wher it is needed.
I'm guessing that the leak occurs between the anode and cathode.
