The doctor conducted an experiment with a battery inside a sausage. The sausage began bubbling within minutes and this indicates to me that it is caused by electric current flowing in the acidic environment - well before the battery case corrodes.
Electric current and magnetic fields are inseparable, so there will be a magnetic field associated with the ingested battery. This should be detectable with a suitable magnetometer waved across the chest/digestive tract. Of course, your stud finder/wire finder would probably work too - or a metal detector.
