Generators (hydro dams, nuclear PP, wind farms) step the power up to transmission voltage via transformer... GXP's (grid exit points) step down transmission power to distribution voltage via transformer... zone substations step it down again with transformers to send out to distribution transformers located in streets and large business consumers...
Mind blowing.
And that's just one example. Power networks are designed different the world over but the fundamentals do not change.
