The problem with Android has nothing to do with the operating system/platform. It's due to the wide variety of microphones and front end electronics. They will likely need to do testing on the frequency responses to ensure that the electronics doesn't filter out frequency ranges that are critical to indicate respiratory disease. This won't need clinical trials but likely will need controlled bench tests. They will probably need to limit to a few popular higher end models (eg Samsung Galaxy) and gradually add devices. This was always going to be a problem as the spectral characteristics of measured sound depend on the hardware.
