I think it is called push marketing. You know demand will be for 100 units so you only release 50 units so 50 people will be excited they got one and tell everyone how great it is because they feel special. The 50 people who did not get one will scream about missing out so those two groups will incite others to want one and a black market for the first 50 develops etc etc. Then more stock is produced to a now hungry desperate market place.
I don’t think it will be a problem even if the above occurs deliberately or by accident the outcome will be the same. Huge demand.
