Barrel, I get that Akida isn't designed to do more than 4 bit processing to ensure low power consumption whilst still retaining high accuracy.
This might be a silly question to you but I don't get why it would be so difficult to change the setup to be able to handle higher bit rates. 8 bits are effectively 2x 4-bits being computed in series.
While unlikely to achieve maximum efficiency, couldn't you for example combine 2 NPUs to deal with higher bits?
