The analogy about Henry Ford "coming up with the fiction of horsepower " is just plain wrong.
The term was used by the Scottish engineer James Watt over 100 years earlier. It became common practice to use the term "horsepower " for all subsequent steam engines and in turn internal combustion engines.
He used the term due to the fact there was a genuine need to be able to differentiate the power output of various steam engines.
