The Akida chip does use an ARN Cortex processor for configuration/set-up only. The operation of the NN is practically independent of the CPU once the NN is configured.
Akida can be used in a stand-alone mode or as a co-processor.
When it is used as a co-processor with a CPU, it relieves the CPU of calculation-intense activity such as image or speech classification - tasks which consume massive compute power. The CPU is consigned to more mundane (book keeping), and routine program implementation tasks which it can perform quite efficiently. Such a co-processor arrangement still benefits from the power/time savings which Akida provides.
