This is actually a concept that I struggle to remove my emotions from. Even now, I see the constant de-risking of BRN but can't commit more capital as it breaks some of my other rules regarding diversification. I also struggle to shake that feeling that I should have acted differently when the price was lower and that I could lose so much more if it was to crash after purchasing more at premium.
Point is, I fully agree with you on this and I'm glad you have been able to put it so eloquently and with a real life example. You can't look back and regret the decisions you didn't make earlier, as without hindsight you would make the same decision over and over again.
Today I'm going to bend my own rules though, it's time to grab some more BRN. When Qualcomm or NASA grab some IP I know I won't be worrying about what value I bought at in the cents.
