They really are fast. Moving at a speedy 7.9km/s, these event-based neuromorphic sensors are housed on board UNSW Canberra Space's M2 satellites and orbit the earth every 95 minutes.
Designed and built by our team at the International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems (ICNS) at the The MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development at Western Sydney University, this biology-inspired camera payload will look outward into space and will be used to track stars and other satellites – two critical tasks needed for tracking, detecting, and even cleaning up space junk.
These cameras were launched on the 22nd of March and are the first neuromorphic cameras to be placed into orbit. This is an achievement that has been three years in the making and one that we could not have done without the fantastic collaboration and support from UNSW Canberra Space and the Royal Australian Air Force.
Incredible work by Andrew Lambert, Paras Karki, Israel Vaughn, Colin Symons, and Fanpeng Kong.
