Bad day? I don't like arguing about inane things... or anything really..... clearly I don't think this is unimportant. I guess because I worked in revenue service for 7 years.
I was trying to illustrate the duality of the tax with my questions and specifically removing salary from the equation because people always think salary has some special place in the tax calc and any other amount is "on top" or taxed higher.... As I said.... all taxable income goes into one lump sump.
It's the progressive tax calculation that throes people. Another way to look at the duality is with a common practical example - discounts on "bulk" buys.
You can buy 1 pair of shoes for $100. Retailed offers you a second identical pair for another $50. Shoes arrive and you go for a jog in one of them.
You mate stops you in the park and says, nice shoes. How much did you pay for that pair of shoes?
Is it $100? Is it $50? Is it $75?
