The chemical giant is planning to become the world's largest general battery material company.LG Chem’s board approved on July 29 a plan to buy the chemical and electronic materials (CEM) business unit of LG Electronics' Business Solutions (BS) Division for 525 billion won.LG Electronics' CEM business unit produces battery materials, including separators, and display materials.
It has production facilities in Cheongju of Korea, Hangzhou of China, and Wrocław of Poland.LG Chem decided to acquire the CEM business unit to intensively foster its battery material business as a new growth engine. With the acquisition, LG Chem has become the only company in the world that has the technologies used for the production of core battery materials, including cathode materials, anode binders, electrolyte additives and carbon nanotubes (CNTs).
LG Chem has expertise in safety reinforced separators (SRS), which are coated with ceramic materials to greatly increase safety and performance. It also secured next-generation coating technology that can increase the heat resistance of separators through continuous research and development.
LG Electronics' CEM business unit has the technique to coat separators at the world's fastest speed.Market research firm SNE Research forecasts that the global separator market for secondary batteries is expected to grow 27.9 percent annually from 4.1 trillion won in 2021 to about 11 trillion won in 2025.LG Chem is planning to invest six trillion won by 2025, including this acquisition, to become the world's No. 1 general battery material company. It is planning to focus on fostering battery materials such as cathode materials, separators, anode binders, heat dissipation adhesives and CNTs.
