In western NSW, the Dubbo-Coonamble branch line was recently highlighted by the NSW government as shortly to be the beneficiary of track relaying between Gilgrandra and the terminus at Coonamble. Track quality (just like road pavements) deteriorates if tracks aren't relaid for 30 years, and the result is usually that track managers such as UGL Rail in rural NSW or the Australian Rail Track Corporation for the national standard gauge network eventually impose draconian train speed limits of as low as 40 kilometres an hour.
I'm not surpriised, because on Thursday 9 February, not only is there a Pacific National-operated grain train loading for GNC at Coonamble, but competitor QUB has one of its own grain trains loading at its facility also at Coonamble while Cargills-AWB has a train (also PN-operated) loading at Gilgandra's GrainFlow today.
It's unusual to observe three trains concurrently on this branch line but it demonstrates how much grain there is to be moved, with a lot being what GNC whimsically always notes as the 'exportable surplus.'
I'd naturally prefer all three trains were for GNC but it remains #1 in market share, and is expert at clipping others' tickets at stage(s) in the complex handling process.
