As the end of the 2022-23 financial year for most listed Australian companies (but not GNC) approaches, on Saturday 24 June 2023, Pacific National-operated grain trains for GNC appear to be loading at Walgett in NSW's far northwest, the terminus of a long branch line from Narrabri, as well as at Premer on the crosscountry Werris Creek to Binnaway line. Both these trains should end up at the Port of Newcastle, NSW, adding to Australia's trade account surplus.
Much further south, on the NSW Riverina's branch line from The Rock to Boree Creek, a QUB-operated grain train seems to be loading at Milburlong, 577 kilometres by rail from Sydney's Central station.
My guess is this is for GNC, but QUB is supplying the three ex-South Australian Railways (when government owned) branch line '830' class locomotives, as the track won't support heavier locomotives such as the PN (and former NSW Government Railways') 81 class. So at The Rock or Junee, main line locos will presumably take over for the trek to Port Kembla NSW's Inner Harbour GNC port facilities.
Another GNC empty grain train arrived at Speed (on the line to Mildura and Yelta, but south of Ouyen, Victoria) at about 0240 hours this morning, so also looks to be taking on the golden stuff.
This is a lot of activity for the 'off season'.
